In this interview we asked Andy about his career in the hospitality industry and how he earned the responsibility of managing a 303 year old Inn in Concord Massachusetts. After graduating from Salem State, Andy took an evening manager job at the historic Hawthorne hotel that inspired a love for historical properties and motivated him to develop a career in hospitality.

2005 - 2010

Agave Mexican Bistro

Andy’s first job, was at a new Mexican restaurant. The fast-paced environment fascinated him. The kind of job that rewards someone who is personable, dedicated, ambitious and with a positive attitude. He knew this was an area where he could excel.

Class of 2012

Salem State University

Andy wanted to study english and writing while at SSU, which he did even though he didn’t want to be a teacher. After a positive experience at the Mexican restaurant, he wondered if working at a hotel would be as good.

2011 - 2012

Waterfront Hotel

While still in school, Andy took his first front desk job at the Waterfront hotel, working evenings and over-nights. Working at the front desk allowed him to interact with all other departments in the hotel, from maintenance to housekeeping and the restaurant. 

2012 - 2016

Hawthorne Hotel

After graduating, Andy took a chance and applied for an evening manager position at the Hawthorne Hotel. The hotel interested him more than any other because of its historical nature and because its privately owned. During his years at the hotel, his focus was to become a well-rounded manager. He managed the front desk, assisted dining services, the housekeeping department and the finance department.

2020

Concord's Colonial Inn

The Colonial Inn is a sister property of the Hawthorne Hotel. Andy’s transition to this property was a gradual one and it started with him managing the food and beverage department. Soon after displaying great potential, he was promoted to General Manager.

Industry Details

A Hotel (Inn, Lodging) General Manager is responsible for profitability of the property. It is also up to the GM to ensure that all aspects of the property run properly, like operations, staffing and customer satisfaction. Lastly, monitoring costs, budgets, and forecasts.

Employment growth of lodging managers is projected to show little to no change. However, growth is expected in areas of tourism and travel.

Important Qualities

Being able to communicate clearly and persuasively is probably the most valuable skill in any industry but especially in Hospitality. Leadership skills, time-management skills and problem-solving skills are also very important skills to develop. Utilizing time properly to recognize shortcomings and effectively lead staff through solutions will make the organization stride forward.
